Mammals

Mammals are a class of vertebrate animals whose name is derived from their distinctive feature, mammary glands, which they use in feeding their young. They are also characterized by the possession of sweat glands, hair, three middle ear bones used in hearing, and a neocortex region in the brain.

Elephants of the Sea [1]: Until a few weeks ago, the famous elephant seals of Guadalupe Island seemed entirely out of reach, as far as I was concerned. Five times I had started for the Island, but on each occasion something came up to change the destination of the boat.

Our Noblest Deer, The American Elk or Wapiti [2]: It is generically related to our American elk or wapiti, but is considerably smaller, with lighter antlers. Next to the moose our elk is the largest living deer in the whole world, and the adult bull in full prime with towering rack of antlers is truly a magnificent animal.
